Convair B36 Peacemaker

Convair B36 Peacemaker
Convair B36 Peacemaker over Death Valley. Convair produced some fabulous aircraft (see Convair B58 Hustler) and this is certainly up there with the best. The largest piston engined aircraft ever built, the greatest wing span of any military aircraft, massive range and endurance...

Capable of carrying any of the then current nuclear bombs over an unrefuelled range of just under 10,000 miles, the aeroplane could stay airborne for 24 hours on standby patrol. Six piston engines and four jets took the aeroplane up to cruising altitude where the jets would be shut down to conserve fuel until called on to speed to the target.

Rather than carrying two different types of aviation fuel, the piston engines were modified to run on the same Jet A4 fuel as used by the four jets.
This aircraft was photographed at Pima Air & Space Museum, Tucson, Arizona.
